What Five Years Of Building A Business Actually Taught Me

I made several mistakes in year one of building my coaching business.

Over the last five years I’ve built a six-figure business, worked with incredible lawyers and business owners, and figured out what actually works.

And if I could go back and tell my younger self four things, here’s what I’d say.

First: Get clear on who you want to support.

I tried to help everybody. I didn’t have a niche. I didn’t know who my ideal client was. So I took on anyone who came my way – corporate professionals, freelancers, career changers, business owners. I was frustrated and scattered.

Getting clear on who you actually want to support changes everything. Your messaging. Your marketing. Your energy. When you know exactly who your ideal client is, you can show up powerfully for them.

Second: You don’t have a monetary value.

This one took me years to understand. We’re taught to “charge what you’re worth.” But you are priceless. You do not have a monetary value.  You are not a commodity to be bought or sold.

Pricing is about the value you deliver to your clients. The problems you solve. The outcomes you create. The money they make or save because of you.

When you price based on that instead of your own self-doubt, everything shifts.

Third: Get support way earlier than you think.

I waited a year before I got my own coach. A year of figuring it out alone, making expensive mistakes, doubting myself in the quieter weeks.

If I’d had someone thinking alongside me from the start – asking the right questions, helping me see my blind spots – I’d have saved thousands in wasted time and money.

Don’t wait like I did.

Fourth: You can have both success and freedom.

Building a business that works for your life, not one that runs your life, is absolutely possible. I’ve done this while raising two kids, managing a household (and trying not to lose myself!).

It’s been messy, imperfect, genuinely hard sometimes. But it’s also been the best decision I ever made.

If you’re building something right now and wondering if there’s a better way, there is. It doesn’t have to be hard. And you don’t have to do it alone.

If you want to talk about what’s possible for you to grow your business, confidentially message me or book time to have a conversation.
